Tombstone.
Early this morning I walked over to the hotel and talked with Payton about how she’d been having a lot of bad dreams. She said she wanted to see a doc about getting a physical for her adoption papers and he said that she tucked Jimmy in over at Miss Joan’s before heading to her mom’s house for the night. We talked about the dress she wore and we saw a new man in town but didn’t know his name.
Later on I saw Mr. Alex and ran to give him a big hug. I told him all about the trip to Canada and how I learned Apache words and all about what happened with her father and how she and Alex were best friends like me and Jimmy. When I asked how he was, he changed the subject and took me over to the grocery store for ice cream.
“Hey guess what,” I told him.
“What?”
“Miss Trin had a sleepover last night. I saw them sleeping on the couch. She looked so happy. But then when I woke up Miss Trin was in her bed. Guess he left early before I woked up. But I got up in middle of the night and looked downstairs.”
“Well, I’m glad she was happy,” Mr. Alex blushed a bit.
“Uh huh.”
I told him about the SS Cootie gang and he loved the idea. I told him that our hideout was in the library and he said he was glad I was making friends there. I told him about class and how no one wanted to share with me and then I headed home to read.
