Tombstone.
This morning I ran over to the hotel and hugged Miss Pet with a smile. “Hiya Nat!” she greeted me.
“Guess what!”
“Guess what, what?”
“Miss Trin and I taking trip tomorrow!”
“Oh yeah? Where ya going?”
“Canda! Her brother’s getting married! She no want to leave me here all ’lone!”
“Oh my! That is a good fer piece… Well that is mighty sweet of her. And you get to meet her family also.”
“Uh huh! I hope dey like me. She said it jes her mama and brother. Her daddy died you know.”
“What’s not to like?” Miss Pet looked at me. “And iff’n they don’t, you tell ‘em to come talk to me,” she grinned.
“I’m a bit scared of bein’ on tha train again though.”
“Ooooh, how come?”
“Cause last time I were on one,” I looked down. “But it’ll be different now. Miss Trin with me, no mean girls.”
“That’s right! Ya want a blueberry muffin? I made ‘em this morning.”
“Oh oh oh Miss Pet! Guess what else!”
“Um pigs started flying and chickens got lips…?” she giggled.
“I found a journal by an Apache lady in the caves with Mr Alex! Miss Trin has book with Apache words. She gonna teach me to talk it!”
“That is wonderful. If I remember right, Trin is half Apache herself, ain’t she?”
“Uh huh! She told me her daddy fought in war as apache Well, back long ago apache. But he had apache medal Cause they were fighting to help in the war She kinda look sad when talking bout medal. I no know why.”
“Maybe one day, she’ll share all that with ya.”
“You has blueberry muffins?”
“Uh huh. Let me get ya one.” She opened the display case and took out a muffin, handing it to me. “Now be careful, its still warm and the middle will be hot, ok?”
“Ok, I eat slow,” I said and nibbled at the edges as Miss Pet took one for herself.
“This IS good!”
I giggled and asked, Hey miss Pet?”
“Yes’sum?”
“I tink miss Trin has new friend. Like me and Jimmy is friends but the adult way.”
“Oh yeah? I think I met him last night, he seems a pleasant fella.”
“She was smilin lots when she got home so I asked her.”
“Well having a good friend will make you smile,” Miss Pet grinned. “And it’s about time something good happened for her.”
“But she also confused bout something. Do you believe in ghosts Miss Pet?”
“Well, I believe in spirits... and the Bible does call the Holy Spirit the Holy Ghost sometimes, so I reckon I do. but not in the scary spooky way some believe.”
“She said she saw something last night dat was weird. Cause I asked her why she confused this morning if she so happy last night. She said she was at dis other cave. With another um.... work case thing. Well she said she went with Mis Zan and Mr Chris right… Cos she knew I had breakfast with them here. Dey were at the caves and she was lookin at some note or sometin when she saw someone on the hill. Said it look like lady who died ’front of her. Everybody but Mr Chris saw it, she said. Dey was all confused and Miss Zan was scared.”
“Hmm, well I don’t believe those that passed on can still walk the earth .. even in their spirit form. I mean, think about it, once we get free of our bodies, we can go to heaven to be with Jesus. So who would want to stay and hang around here?” Miss Pet made a face. “No missy. I don’t think it was a person who passed on, but maybe a familiar spirit she saw.”
“A familiar spirit? But three o’ dem saw it. Miss Zan fell in water she said.”
“Oooh familiar spirits can manifest to as many as they wish hon.”
“So it WAS a ghost?”
“How did Zan get in the water?” Miss Pet shook her head. “Not of a person that was alive. No missy, t’aint like that.”
“Miss Trin said Miss Zan scared and falle’d.”
“Oh I see. How was your muffin?”
“It good. I think I gonna go home and start learning ’pache.”
“Alright sweetie. You be safe now,” Miss Pet said and I headed home.
