Tombstone.
This afternoon I went over to the hotel and greeted miss Reb. “You being a good girl?” she asked me.
“Of course! See I even wore a dress today cause it’s Sunday.”
“Good,” she nodded. “Is church at 1:30 pm?”
“I dunno.”
“Well let’s see… Someone will know.”
“I see if anyone in hotel,” I said and started to walk towards the Russ Hotel.
“Where is the other boy ? I hope you haven’t been to the caves again?”
“We ’llowed to go in caves. Just not mines.”
“You heard Mr Jimmi the other day he said no caves too,” Miss Reb shook her head.
“But Miss Trin and Miss Pet said…”
“I will ask Ms Pet myself when I see her. But it’s for your own safety. Remember the mean man?”
“Guess I’ll just find a spot and read. S’all we can do without gettin’ in trouble anyway,” I frowned and looked down.
“I wish I could read, I never went to school,” Miss Reb nodded.
“I had lots of time to learn how to read an’ write. Now I teach Jimmy.”
“That’s good. Can you teach me?” she smiled.
“I guess… Have to go school though. There helpful board there.”
“Well I’ll check it out one day.”
“It has all the letters and stuf and you can copy ’em on the blackboard.”
“That’s helpful,” she nodded. “I can read signs and short words its them big words that I can’t read.”
“Uh huh. Like I know that big red sign there says Saloon. But this next building here, there are some mighty big words on the window.”
“That the news office ma’am. See it making paper.”
“So that’s what it does,” she nodded.
“Uh huh.”
“Them words too big for me to understand. Funny thing is the smaller they write the word usually the bigger it is to understand.”
“I think I go nap. Maybe I see you at church,” I said then.
“See round Miss Nat,” Miss Reb smiled and I headed home.
